I’m not a fan of public transportation and use it sparingly. But I do use it. When convenience, expediency and the situation requires it, using public transportation can be an exercise in the awareness principles. Aside from terrorist attacks like those seen in Tokyo, Israel, London and Madrid, among others, public modes of transportation largely attract villains and hooligans of all sorts.
It’s with this in mind that I found it quite disheartening to see, as I oriented myself to the train car I has just entered, a high ranking officer of the Naval Special Warfare community sitting with his family and his back to the closest entrance. There was no scan on his part of the new set of passengers that had just boarded and I detected no actions on his part to scan the area as he and his family got up to disembark.
Granted, in a relatively permissive environment it’s acceptable to adjust one’s own security posture accordingly, yet some basic principles, like positioning and a relaxed awareness should remain constant for those who would be a warrior.
Stay well friends.
